Smart Goals: 3 keys to fitness success

Believe it or not in just a couple of minutes everyday you can do a lot to be healthier; think about it as mini ‘healthy’ make over. In as little as 3 to 5 minutes every day you can fit in more fitness, eat a little healthier and even reduce your stress.

Fit in More Fitness

One of my favorite sayings; “The more you move – the more calories you’ll burn – the better you’ll feel,” is the easiest way to get started. It can be as simple as standing up, when you are standing you are burning 50% more calories then when you are sitting down. Another easy way to burn more calories through out your day is to always take the steps instead of an elevator or escalator; in fact; if you go up and down a flight of stairs 10 extra times in one day you can burn an addition 50 to 60 calories. Finally, instead of getting up to get a snack during TV commercials do jumping jacks, squats, crunches or even just march in place.

Eat Healthier

Studies show we make the worst food choices when we are hungry and not prepared. In as little as 3 to 5 minutes you can plan your meals and snacks for the next day, that way you will know what you are are going to eat and you will not be hungry. Be sure to have breakfast within an hour of waking up and dinner at least 2 hours before going to bed. It is a good idea to have a small snack, approximately 100 to 150 calories, in the morning and mid afternoon. Remember to take the time to read nutritional labels and pay particular attention to the serving sizes.

Reduce Stress

A great way to start your day is to take a couple of minutes and visualize all the events of your day; but do it with each event ending with a positive outcome. Experts recommend taking a few minutes throughout the day to sit quietly, breath deeply and literally clear your mind of everything and just relax. Finally, at the end of the day make a list either on paper or mentally, of all the good and positive things that happened instead of dwelling on what you did not get accomplished.

I want to challenge you to take 3 to 5 minutes tomorrow for a mini healthy make over – because it is truly the little changes that make all the difference.
